Peace Education
It is said that education is the best weapon for peace on earth. We teach children to problem solve, practice peaceful conflict resolution, and to express themselves appropriately. We instill respect for mankind and our mother earth. Every classroom is set up with a peace table where children are welcomed to explore alone or to discuss a particular incident with a classmate.
The Summer Camp Program
Our Summer Camp program is available for children from 1 to 12 years of age. It is divided into 5 two-week sessions. Each session incorporates a different theme in addition to the balance of games, arts and crafts and outdoor water play. All of the activities we do will bring to life our theme. Through story time, specially prepared snacks, art projects, we will enhance our camp sessions. Our incoming field trips will consist of visitors who will make the theme come alive.
Art Program
AYCMA recognizes the importance of Art education for our students. Research has shown students who participate in the arts (visual arts, music, drama),perform better in other fields of study. This whole brain development helps the student better develop higher-order thinking skills and problem solving ability. Art classes offer opportunity to teach cooperative learning, responsibility, art appreciation (something doesn't have to be "pretty" to be valued ).Art is a valuable tool for character development and allows students individual self expression and self discovery.
Our Art Program involves weekly lessons designed to focus on the Basic Elements of Art and Principals of Design, in which students explore line, shape/form, color, texture, space, value, repetition, balance, emphasis, contrast and unity. Lessons are divided between open ended activities which involve experimentation and exploration of the art materials, the "process" of creating, without a specific outcome. Students enjoy this freedom and become more comfortable with the materials. Students equally enjoy the lessons with a goal or theme, in which they follow basic steps (process) to complete the project. Students are always encouraged to freely express themselves and to remember "there are no mistakes in ART, only things you might want to change". The students show great satisfaction and pride in their finished product. A wide variety of art materials are available to explore through drawing, painting, college, printmaking, three-dimensional design and ceramics/sculpture. All lessons are adaptable to fit each level to enable each student to have a happy outcome.
After School Band Program
Our after school band program is open to students from 3rd through 8th grade. Both beginning and experienced students are welcome. The ensemble is comprised of woodwinds, brass, and percussion. The band gives two major concerts per year, and also has performance opportunities at various school and community events. The repertoire consists of traditional band pieces, as well as contemporary pieces and original compositions.
